Maze guide

What makes a good maze, and how GenMazes builds one

Random walls are easy. A maze that feels fair, keeps a solver thinking and never wastes their time takes a few rules. Each rule below maps to a setting or a check you can see in the report.

Meaningful choice points

Good mazes stop the solver at real intersections where they have to look ahead, instead of gliding down one long corridor.

In GenMazesTune choice points generates up to 24 candidates and keeps the one with the most junctions on the solution path. The report counts them.

No symmetry, no pattern

Asymmetric layouts with irregular turns are harder and more engaging than mirrored or uniform designs.

In GenMazesWalls are carved by a seeded growing-tree algorithm. The Path texture slider mixes winding runs with branching so no two regions look alike.

Smart dead ends

Dead ends should test memory and spatial tracking, not pad the page with lazy one-cell U-turns.

In GenMazesSmart dead ends finds stubs of one or two cells and joins them onto neighbouring branches, making fewer but longer and more tempting dead ends.

No branches by the exit

Once the finish is in sight, solvers rarely explore side paths, so branches there only add noise.

In GenMazesClear the exit zone reconnects any side branch that leaves the final stretch somewhere earlier in the maze. The exit zone length is adjustable.

Scale and pacing

Path length should match the audience: enough twists to need concentration, never so many that the solver gives up.

In GenMazesPresets run from Kids to Expert. The report shows solution length and how much of the maze it covers so you can pace a whole book.

Visual clarity

The rules of the path must stay consistent so the solver never feels cheated by a change halfway through.

In GenMazesOne rule everywhere: walk between the walls. Every maze has exactly one solution and no loops, with even line weight and clear arrows. Edits that break this show up in the report.

Which export to use

PDF for print

Vector lines at any page size, fitted inside half-inch margins. Puzzle on page 1, answer key on page 2. Ready for KDP interiors or classroom printing.

SVG for layout tools

Fully editable vector. Recolour walls, add a frame or drop it into a book template without losing sharpness.

PNG for quick use

3000 px fills a full page at 300 DPI. Pick a transparent background to place mazes over artwork.

JSON for AI

Every cell, every passage, the start, the finish and the solution, with plain instructions on how to read it. Square mazes also include a text drawing an AI can read at a glance.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is GenMazes free? Can I sell the mazes I make?

Yes. Every maze you generate is free to use for any purpose, including commercial puzzle books, activity books, worksheets and merchandise. No attribution is needed and there are no watermarks.

How do I make a printable maze for my classroom?

Pick a difficulty preset such as Kids or Easy, choose a shape your students will enjoy, then export a PDF. Page 1 is the maze and page 2 is the answer key, sized for Letter or A4 paper.

What kinds of mazes can I create?

Square (orthogonal), triangle (delta), hexagon (sigma) and circular (theta) cells, inside a rectangle, circle, triangle, hexagon, diamond or heart. You can add an inner room and start or finish at the top, bottom, sides or the centre.

How do I put mazes in a KDP puzzle book?

Export each maze as a PDF at your trim size, such as 6 × 9 or 8.5 × 11 inches, or as a 3000 px PNG for 300 DPI print. Note each seed so you can rebuild any maze later, and collect the answer keys at the back of the book.

Can ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini read my maze?

Yes. Use Copy for AI chat or the JSON export. It lists every cell, every open passage, the start, the finish and the solution, with plain instructions an AI can follow. Square mazes also include a text drawing.

Does every maze have exactly one solution?

Yes. GenMazes builds perfect mazes with a single route from start to finish and no loops. If you edit walls by hand, the report tells you right away if a change added a loop or blocked the path.

How do I send feedback or get help?

Email info@genmazes.com. Bug reports, feature ideas and kind words are all welcome, and we read every message.
